This is a problem that has occurred in the past day or so. I do not speak French and did not knowingly do anything to cause this change in behavior. I have an Office subscription; and I believe that there has been an auto-update recently.

It is generally a good idea to clear the check sttyle for "Detect language automatically. If the language of new documents is not the desired language, go worr File Options Language and make sure that the desired language is set as preferred. Generally this works best if the same language is the default Windows language. Your description suggests that the table is not in the main body of the document.
Perhaps it is in a text box? In that case, you definitely have to deal with the table content separately. Here, re- applying stye to all the text in the main body of the document, including table cells, works every time.
I also recommend whag the language specified for the Normal style and for the table style, and change the language for both styles, if necessary. When I right click on the word, the suggested "correct" spelling appears to be French. I clicked on the new Editor icon button in the upper right of the Home ribbon. I frrench me that there are 13 total suggestions, with 2 of them being English and 11 of them being French. If anyone has suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.

I woord of have the problem cleared up -- but not entirely resolved. I did what you and the other person suggested. There was only one part of the document that had the "wrong language" problem. It was a short table 10 lines that I had newly wogd to the document. I created and typed in the table did not copy and past it from somewhere else.
For reasons completely unknown to me, all but one of the lines in the table were formatted for the Proofing Language to be French. Even stranger, the one line that was formatted for proofing in English was not either the first or the last line which might make some sense. I went through the ia line by line and set the proofing language to English US. That seemed to clear up the problem. Before I did that, it was even trying to correct my grammar and punctuation to a French style.
